  This is a monumental work by a revered historian who writes well, reveals great insight, and is eminently quotable. Where are our Will Durant's today? Few serious scholars are willing to accept the criticism that is inevitable with such a massive undertaking. And far too many are stifled from revealing history and its lessons adequately because of the current all-consuming academic fad of political correctness.
  
  Of course, He and his wife can't cover everything from the dawn of civilization to Napoleon. What he does do is paint the broad picture using specific examples from time to time. Naturally some subjectivity is involved, and he acknowledged this readily.
  
  Volume I should get you hooked as he tells us the many necessities for transition from savagery to civilization, why he regards the first culture as agriculture, etc. This was not his only profound and esteemed writing, but it is an excellent example, and many would consider this his masterpiece. It certainly is huge
  
  This set was revised or rewritten 3 times by Will Durant. This, his 3rd version, has 11 volumes by adding The Age of Napoleon.

  The Durants strove throughout The Story of Civilization to create what they called "integral history". They opposed this to the "specialization" of history, an anticipatory rejection of what some have called the "cult of the expert." Their goal was to write a "biography" of a civilization, in this case, the West, including not just the usual wars, politics and biography of greatness and villainy, but also the culture, art, philosophy, religion, and the rise of mass communication. Much of The Story considers the living conditions of everyday people throughout the twenty-five hundred years their "story" of the West covers. They also bring an unabashedly moral framework to their accounts, constantly stressing the repetition of the "dominance of strong over the weak, the clever over the simple." The Story of Civilization is the most successful historiographical series in history. It has been said that the series "put Simon and Schuster on the map" as a publishing house.
  
  The Story of Civilization is also noteworthy because of the excellence of its writing style, and contains numerous apothegms worthy of the Roman and Renaissance authors Durant admired. Discussing certain inconsistencies in the character of Botticelli in The Renaissance (page 137), he writes: "Doubtless like all of us he was many men, turned on one or another of his selves as occasion required, and kept his real self a frightened secret from the world."
  
  For Rousseau and Revolution, (1967), the 10th volume of The Story of Civilization, they were awarded the Pulitzer Prize for literature; later followed one of the two highest awards granted by the United States government to civilians, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, by President Ford in 1977.

  
  
  

  I wish to tell as much as I can, in as little space as I can, of the contributions that genius and labor have made to the cultural heritage of mankind – to chronicle and contemplate, in their causes, character and effects, the advances of invention, the varieties of economic organization, the experiments in government, the aspirations of religion, the mutations of morals and manners, the masterpieces of literature, the development of science, the wisdom of philosophy, and the achievements of art. As far as I know the author even translated/invented the English name for them, "Niwaki" for which there previously was none. The best part of the book though is how the author urges the reader to apply the techniques he presents in the book to his or her own style of gardening transcending the idea of Japanese Gardens in the traditional sense. A fascinating look at the daily meal schedule includes insight in to how the European conquerors imposed their eating habits and encouraged overeating, with the abundance found in the New World. Modern life is shown to affect where people eat, as buying meals, often from street vendors, during the workday has become more of a necessity. The survey includes a discussion of special occasions, including agricultural celebrations and Catholic feasts with indigenous elements. The overview is completed by a chapter on diet and health, covering such topics as botanical knowledge and science and an assessment of the nutritional value of the South American staples.
