Transistors: From Crystals to Integrated Circuits

Transistors: From Crystals to Integrated Circuits
by M.E. Levinshtein, G. Simin
World Scientific Publishing Company | 1996 | ISBN: 9810227434 | Pages: 250 | PDF | Size: 19,8 MB

This new book by M. Levinshtein and G. Simin tells the readers about the design and work of the most important and interesting semiconductor devices - the transistors. The book is written in a friendly and easy to read manner and is meant primarily for young people, high school students, freshmen and sophomores. However, the original approach to semiconductor physics makes this book attractive to physics teachers and professors as well.

The book consists of 3 parts:

Part I: the section on semiconductors describes the main properties of semiconductors, explains the difference between the semiconductors, metals and dielectrics. We find here the explanation of the appearance of the properties of semiconductors which underlie their numerous applications. This part also contains a vivid and detailed description of the main types of motion of the charge carriers in semiconductors: thermal motion, motion in the electric field and diffusion.

Part II covers barriers and junctions. In order to understand the principles of the work of the most important semiconductor devices, it is not sufficient just to get to know the properties of semiconductors. It is also quite essential to study certain specific and interesting phenomena - the so-called junctions. This part of the book contains a detailed and vivid description of those properties and in that view of the properties of the p-n junctions and diodes: photodiodes, varicaps, light emitting diodes, solar cells and rectifier diodes.

Part III covers transistors. It describes the basis of the work of the bipolar and field effect transistors. Without making use of rather complicated equations or notions of quantum mechanics the authors give a clear and simple explanation of the cause of ability of those devices to amplify and generate electric signals. They tell the readers how transistors are manufactured and describe the work of the transistor's simplest circuits.

The last chapter of the book is devoted to the ideas underlying the transistors: integrated circuits. It is these integrated circuits which are the foundation of modern electronics: from telephone apparatus to supercomputers, from medical instruments to cosmic communication systems. In conclusion, the authors make an attempt to foresee and imagine, together with the reader what other devices may come to substitute the transistor in the future.

    Understanding Digital Electronics
    Butterworth-Heinemann | ISBN: 0718825217 | 1987 | PDF | 137 pages | 6.33 MB

Don't be left behind by modern developments in digital electronics! They present a fascinating new world of achievement which can be easy to understand, if you start at the beginning. Everyone is familiar with digital displays on watches and clocks and calculators, for example. Each number is formed from seven rectangular 'light bulbs', with the correct number of bulbs switched on by a digital circuit to light up the number required. Digital electronics, in fact, is based on devices which work on an on/off basis, or 'count' in steps of 1 (i.e., in 'digits').

    The Sounding Object
    Publisher: Mondo Estremo Publishing | ISBN: 8890112603 | edition 2003 | PDF | 411 pages | 15,2 mb

During the last couple of decades we have been involved in a revolution: computer-based virtual, distributed, and augmented realities increasingly affect our perception of the world. Despite the abundant technological facilities, we are now faced with lack of knowledge on how to generate sounds which please a perceptual and cognitive system whose evolution developed slowly, over many thousands of years. The authors of this book are striving to find and develop principles that may open the way to get appropriate informative sounds out of future artifacts. They present novel research in perception, physics, numeral analysis, computer science, and human-machine interaction.

    PC Interfacing
    Publisher: Newnes | pages: 352 | 1998 | ISBN: 0750636378 | PDF | 14,4 mb

The main links with your PC and the outside world are the centronic port, used for connecting the printer, the RS232 port, used for the mouse, and the games port for a joystick. This book explores how these input/output (I/O) ports can be put to use through a range of other interfacing applications. This is especially useful for laptop and palmtop PCs which cannot be fitted with internal I/O cards. A novel approach is taken by this book, combining the hardware through which the ports can be explored, and the software programming needed to carry out a range of experiments.
