One's first rotation through pediatric orthopaedics can be a bit like a visit to a foreign country—certain things are familiar, but there are also new sights, unfamiliar terrain, and a language and culture to learn. In other words, Orthopaedic Surgery Essentials: Pediatrics is not meant to be an exhaustive, encyclopedic compendium on the topic, nor does it include much in the way of technical surgical detail. Many other texts and atlases exist to fill those niches. Instead, it is meant to provide the first-time or sometime pediatric orthopaedic visitor with essential information so that he or she will be able to easily and confidently evaluate and initiate treatment on a pediatric patient with a given orthopaedic disorder, as well as provide the patient, family, and primary care or emergency physician with answers to their questions.
The text has been designed to be easily read cover to cover in the course of a 1- or 2-month rotation, or to be used as a quick reference immediately before evaluation of a patient in the emergency department, on the wards, or in the clinic. To facilitate this last use, the table of contents has been arranged to reflect the venue in which the various disorders are usually first encountered.
Finally, we hope that OSE: Pediatrics conveys, at least on some level, the enthusiasm that virtually all pediatric orthopaedists (and certainly all of the contributors to this book) have for our field. While we realize that most orthopaedic residents won't go on to a career in pediatrics, we hope that this book plays a role in making your mandatory tour through our territory fun and exciting.
